Before You Move Debt Into One Loan: Settlement Figures, Early Settlement Costs and Who Pays the Old Creditors

By Editorial Team Published on Updated

Summary

Before moving several debts into one loan, get a written settlement figure for every old debt, the cost of settling each one early, and confirmation of who actually pays the old creditors. Three debts showing RM 7,700 on their statements came back at RM 7,950 in settlement quotes, and a single RM 100 early settlement fee took the real cost of clearing them to RM 8,050, so borrowing the RM 7,700 you thought you owed would leave RM 350 of debt behind.

Before you move several debts into one loan, three things have to be in writing: a settlement figure for every old debt, the cost of settling each one early, and confirmation of who pays the old creditors. The reason is arithmetic, not paperwork. Three debts showing RM 7,700 between them on their statements came back at RM 7,950 once settlement quotes arrived, and one lender charged a RM 100 early settlement fee, so clearing them really cost RM 8,050. Borrow the RM 7,700 you thought you owed and RM 350 of debt stays behind, on an account you believed you had closed.

Why is the statement balance the wrong number?

Because a statement is a snapshot of a date that has already passed. A settlement figure is calculated to the day you ask for it, and it can include charges that have accrued since the statement, amounts already billed but not yet due, and any fee for ending the agreement early.

The direction of the difference surprises people. Where charges were calculated up front over the whole term, what you owe today is not the original total minus what you have paid: the lender works out a rebate on the unexpired portion by a method set out in the agreement. Ask which method applies and ask for the resulting figure in writing rather than estimating it, and get the date the quote expires, because quotes lapse.

What does early settlement cost on the old debts?

Ask each existing lender these four questions, and write the answers next to the settlement figure:

  1. Is there an early settlement or prepayment fee, and is it a fixed amount or a percentage of the outstanding balance?
  2. Is there a lock-in period during which settling early costs more, or is not permitted at all?
  3. How is the rebate on unexpired charges calculated, if the agreement priced the credit over the full term?
  4. Is any part of a bundled premium refundable if the agreement ends early? Some products refund a share and some do not, so do not assume.

These fees are small individually and decisive collectively. Where consolidation would have saved RM 160, RM 170 of settlement fees turns the exercise into a RM 10 loss. Add every fee to the new loan column before you compare, then run the comparison on your own numbers; the independent, unofficial (TUNAI PANTAS) Loan App SIM listing on this site describes a loan simulation, calculator and guide that does arithmetic on figures you type in and nothing else. It cannot quote you a settlement figure or approve anything.

Who actually pays off the old debts?

Two arrangements, carrying very different risks.

The new lender pays the old creditors directly. Cleaner: the money never passes through your hands. Ask for the list of payees and amounts before disbursement, and check it against your settlement quotes line by line.

The money is paid to you and you settle the debts yourself. Here the whole risk is yours. Pay every old debt the same day the money arrives, keep the receipts, then do the step most people skip: ask each old lender for written confirmation that the balance is zero and the account is closed. An account sitting at zero is still an open facility.

What should you check about the new loan itself?

  • The amount disbursed covers the real total. In this example that is RM 8,050, not RM 7,700. If the approved amount falls short, decide in advance which debt stays and why.
  • Whether the new loan is secured. Moving unsecured balances onto a loan secured against a vehicle or a property changes what you risk if you cannot pay. That is a different kind of debt wearing a lower instalment.
  • The total payments and the term, multiplied out and compared with the payments left on the old debts. A longer term almost always means a bigger total.
  • Whether early settlement is allowed on the new loan, and on what terms. You may want the option later.
  • Who the lender is. In Malaysia, banks and other licensed financial institutions are supervised by Bank Negara Malaysia, while a non-bank money lender needs a licence under the Moneylenders Act 1951 from the ministry responsible for housing and local government. You can check that side of it with the ministry at KPKT. Confirm a licence with the authority itself rather than with a certificate shown to you.

What should be on paper before you sign?

One page, eight lines: the settlement figure for each old debt and its expiry date; every early settlement fee; the total needed to clear everything; the amount the new lender will disburse; the instalment; the number of instalments; the total payments; and every fee on the new loan. If your own multiplication does not match the total the lender states, ask which figure is wrong before you sign, not after.

One habit protects all of it: do not let a settlement quote expire while you wait for approval. Sequence the steps so the quotes are fresh on the day the money moves.

Frequently asked questions

Is a settlement figure always higher than my statement balance?

Not always, but usually different, and the gap can go either way depending on how the agreement prices credit and what has accrued. Never budget from the statement figure.

How long is a settlement quote valid?

Only to the date written on it, which is commonly a matter of days or weeks. After that the figure is recalculated. Ask for the expiry date at the same time you ask for the amount.

Can I consolidate only some of my debts?

Yes, and it is often the better answer. Move the debts whose remaining cost is high and leave alone anything that is nearly finished or priced below what the new loan charges. The arithmetic is the same, run debt by debt.

Will my old accounts close automatically once they are paid?

Do not assume so. Paid and closed are different states, and a zero balance on an open facility is exactly what makes re-borrowing easy. Get the closure in writing and keep it.

Consolidation is a paperwork exercise before it is a money exercise: settlement figure, settlement fee and expiry date for every old debt; a named payee list or same-day receipts; written confirmation that each old account is closed; and the full set of figures on the new loan.
