Salary Deduction Loans: What to Check Before You Sign

By cleanbiz.asia Published on

Summary

Repayment by salary deduction removes the risk of forgetting an instalment, which is why these loans are often easier to obtain. That convenience hides three questions worth asking: what the deduction leaves you each month, what happens if you change or lose your job, and whether the lower risk to the lender is reflected in a lower rate to you.

A loan repaid straight from your salary is easier to get and harder to escape. The deduction happens before the money reaches you, which removes the risk of a forgotten instalment and lowers the lender risk considerably. Whether that lower risk is passed on to you as a lower rate is a question worth asking out loud.

Question one: what does the deduction leave you?

The instalment is not the number to look at. The number to look at is what lands in your account afterwards, measured against your fixed monthly costs. A deduction that is affordable in a normal month but not in a month with a medical bill is a deduction that will push you toward other borrowing.

Work it out on a bad month, not an average one. If there is no margin, the amount is too large or the tenure too short.

Question two: what happens if your employment changes?

This is the clause borrowers most often skip, and it is the one that matters most. Ask explicitly:

  • If you resign or are dismissed, does the full outstanding balance become due immediately, or does repayment convert to a direct arrangement?
  • If deductions stop because payroll changes, who is responsible for ensuring the instalment is still paid, and from which date?
  • Does the loan rely on an arrangement with your employer that ends when the employment does?

Get the answers in writing. A deduction arrangement that quietly becomes an immediate demand is a very different product from the one that was sold.

Question three: is the rate actually better?

Lower risk should mean a lower price. Compare the offer with an ordinary personal loan on the only basis that works: total of all instalments against cash actually received. If the salary deduction version is not cheaper, the convenience is being sold to you rather than given.

Who regulates it

Who supervises the lender depends on what the lender is. Banks and development financial institutions fall under Bank Negara Malaysia. Moneylenders are licensed under the Moneylenders Act 1951 and supervised by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government at kpkt.gov.my. Company registration details can be verified through SSM.

Verify the entity before signing anything, and remember that an entity absent from the Bank Negara alert list is not thereby confirmed as licensed.

In short

Salary deduction solves the lender problem of being paid. Make sure it also solves yours, and that the price reflects the reduced risk.
